The lecture will cover select security technologies and their applications in distributed systems.

For our purposes a distributed system consists of few trustworthy components and many insecure and unprotected parts, such as single computers and the network connecting them. The best example is the Internet which does not know a central authority or control.

To secure such systems requires mechanisms which deter intruders, allow the recognition of security violations, and may make it possible to protect the users, systems, and applications from such violations.

We will cover the following topics in the class:

Basis for the course are among other material, Internet RFCs and the books Network and Internetwork Security by William Stallings, Prentice Hall, 1995 and Applied Cryptography Second Edition by Bruce Scheier, Wiley & Sons, 1996.
