Gunter Bolch

Gunter Bolch is Acad. Director at the Department of Computer Science 4 (Operating Systems) at the University of Erlangen-Nuernberg, Germany.

He studied Telecommunication at the Technical Universities of Karlsruhe and Berlin and was Assistent Professor at the Department of Process Control at the University of Karlsruhe. In 1973 he completed his Ph.D. (Dr.-Ing.).

After he received his Ph.D. he went to the University of Erlangen and since 1982 he is head of the Performance Modelling and Process Control research group at the Department of Computer Science 4 (Informatik 4). He is researching and lecturing in the area of Performance Modelling (using Queueing Networks, Stochastic Petri Nets and Markov Modells), Process Control and Operating Systems.

For two years he was Visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and for shorter periods at Duke University, Durham NC (USA), the Academy of Science in Minsk (former USSR), the Technical University of Budapest, the Lajos Kossuth University of Debrecen (Hungary) and the Technical University of Berlin.

He is involved in many cooperations with industry and other universities and has written five textbooks on Performance Modelling and Process Control and more than 130 publications in these areas. The most recent books are "Queueing Networks and Markov Chains, Second Edition" (2006, John Wiley & Sons, 878 pages) and "Practical Performance Modeling" (2001, Kluwer Academic Publishers, 409 pages)

He was involved in organizing national and international conferences as member of the program committee and was the program chairman of the ESS'95 in Erlangen (7th European Simulation Symposium). As chairman or cochairman he has organized several ASMTA (Analytical and Stochastic Modelling Techniques and Applications) conferences which were part of the European Simulation Multiconferences (ESM) in Budapest (96), Istanbul (97), Manchester (98), Prague (2001), Darmstadt (2002), Nottingham (2003), Magdeburg (2004), Riga (2005) and Bonn (2006), of the 1st World Congress on Systems Simulation (WCSS 97) in Singapore and of the European Simulation Symposium (ESS) Erlangen (99) and Hamburg (2000).

Dr. Bolch is a member of the GI (German Computer Science Society), the SCS (Society for Computer Simulation International) and the special interest group MMB (Measurement, Modelling and Performance Evaluation) of the GI.
