Using a To-Address containing tags

You can specify the to address as fax-number@i4fax.informatik.uni-erlangen.de, i.e.

+4991318528732@i4fax.informatik.uni-erlangen.de

One can include further fields in the left part of the to-address (i.e. that one to the left of the '@'), to further specify FAX variables. In general a to-address needs to have at least the fax number to use for sending the facsimile and can have other tagged values specified optionally to the right of it:

fax-number/TAG1=tag1-text/TAG3/.../TAGn=tagn-text@i4fax.informatik.uni-erlangen.de

TAG1 is tag carrying a value with it, whereas TAG3 is boolean tag.

Currently the following tags are defined --- note that all tags marked with [P] understand `_' to stand for ` '[SPACE]:

  • TO=

Name of person to receive the facsimile [P]

  • COMPANY=
  • COMP=
  • ORG=

Name of Company of receiving person [P]

  • LOCATION=
  • LOC=
  • PLACE=

    Companies Location [P]

  • TRANSMIT-TIME=
  • TRANSMITTIME=
  • TTS=

Time to send the facsimile (delayed sending) [P]

  • COVER

    Prepend a cover page (boolean)

  • RESOLUTION=
  • RES=

    Resolution for sending the facsimile:

    • low for 98 lpi resolution
    Default resolution is 196 lpi.

  • CONTENT=
  • CONTENTS=
  • CONT=
  • CONTS=

Used to tell the FAX server that the email body contains special stuff, like

    Postscript
    for sending Postscript file
    CompressedPostscript
for sending Postscript files that have been compressed and MIME encoded.
The CONTENT tag usually requires the presence of the OPTIONS tag as well.

  • OPTIONS=
  • OPTS=
  • OPT=

Signals the FAX server that it need to do some special formatting:

    no-email
the mail body is not a normal email (but rather something like a compressed Postscript file)
    cover
prepend a cover page (this has the same effect as specifying the boolean tag COVER)
    report
send back the queue status of the FAX server once the facsimile job has been submitted

  • COMMENTS=
  • COM=
  • COMM=

A one line comment to include when using a cover page. [P]

  • REGARDING=
  • SUBJECT=
  • RE=
  • SUBJ=

The `Subject:' field to use for the facsimile when using a cover page [P]

You only need to specify those tags that you care about. Also, the tag matching is done case insensitive, i.e. it really doesn't matter wether you write them using all upper case or all lower case letters. Here are some examples (I've abbreviated the mail address for better readability, unless you are with the IMMD you need to fully specify the mail address as fax-number@i4fax.informatik.uni-erlangen.de):

  • 39388/To=Bill_Shakespeare/Comp=Uni_Erlangen/Loc=Erlangen@i4fax

This will send a facsimile to the FAX number 39388 (a local one, see above), to the person "Bill Shakespeare", at company "Uni Erlangen", at location "Erlangen".

NOTE: The `_' in `To=Bill_Shakespeare' gets translated to a ` '(SPACE).

  • 39388/To=Bill_Shakespeare/TTS=1800@i4fax

This will send a facsimile to the FAX number 39388, to the person "Bill Shakepeare" and the facsimile shall be transmitted at 18:00.

Tagged to-addresses are quite versatile: you can use them from within any mail user agents, from within FrameMaker, you can include them as aliases in your mail alias file, do a CC or BCC to them, ...

An Example Using To-Addresses

Thus, we could send the following facsimile (note that the tag recognition is done case insensitive, i.e. `TO=' is the same as `to='):

      _______________________________________________________________________

      To: +448014443211/To=Dark_Lady/Loc=London_UK/TTS=Fri_1801/Cover@i4fax
Subject: A Nice Facsimile Shakespeare might have sent
      From: Bill Shakespeare

SONNETS TO SUNDRY NOTES OF MUSIC
      XVII.

On a day, alack the day!
Love, whose month was ever May,
      Spied a blossom passing fair,
      Playing in the wanton air:
Through the velvet leaves the wind
      All unseen, gan passage find;
That the lover, sick to death,
      Wish'd himself the heaven's breath,
      'Air,' quoth he, 'thy cheeks may blow;
Air, would I might triumph so!
But, alas! my hand hath sworn
Ne'er to pluck thee from thy thorn:
      Vow, alack! for youth unmeet:
Youth, so apt to pluck a sweet.
Thou for whom Jove would swear
      Juno but an Ethiope were;
      And deny himself for Jove,
      Turning mortal for thy love.'

How about that? Pretty sleek, huh?

See you tomorrow evening once thou parents have withdrawn,

          Bill
      _______________________________________________________________________
This would tell the FAX server to send the included sonnet to the FAX number +448014443211 using a cover page, setting the `To:' and 'Location:' fields of the cover page to `Dark Lady' and `London, UK' respectively. Also, Bill schedules the facsimile to be sent on Friday evening at a minute past six p.m. (18:01) --- this allows him to take advantage of the cheaper night rate (and also to cancel the facsimile job if he's lost interest in the Dark Lady by Friday 8=).
